Style in substance

All aboard the Combi

While named for the many layout combinations on offer, the Combi also evokes its vehicular namesake – it fits a lot in while still being playful, fun, and incredibly adaptable. We spoke with designer Hildy Kovacs about the versatility and comfort of the sectional lounge suite.

The minimal but (potentially) sprawling form of the Combi brings with it a new level of practicality, the steadfast back cushions and seating pieces that can be combined to create a wide range of configurations.

“It offers more versatility – meaning you can buy it as one or two pieces and combine to fit your space,” says Hildy. “It is a big, comfortable design – ideal for gathering in front of a fire with friends or watching a movie with family.

“With waterproofing it could also work nicely in outdoor rooms. It’s the perfect gathering spot for late afternoon drinks.”

As with all Kovacs furniture, it is a practical design that goes beyond good looks. Those back cushions won’t move when you sit down, and the base connections are solid and enduring. For Hildy, making these elements work with a piece this size was a challenge.

“We needed it to be large scale without compromising accessibility and usability,” she says.

Different depths of seat can be chosen and combined with either a straight or a corner back cushion or kept backless as an ottoman.

This allows for chaise lounge ends, if desired, or even a suite that can be used on all sides – which can provide extra functionality for a warehouse apartment or office waiting room. It also means it’s easy to rearrange the Combi as the family moves or grows.

While building their pieces to be timeless and lasting, the Kovacs team has also put work into ensuring each piece treads lightly.

“We need to do the best by our clients,” says Hildy. “That means ensuring our raw materials combine to create something that will endure and, when it’s finally at the end of life, that everything can be recycled easily.

Available in a huge range of fabrics, including bold patterns and subtly toned neutrals, the Combi can be made to fit many different lifestyle needs and interior aesthetics.
