Recently, Kovacs Design Furniture had the pleasure of collaborating with The Textile Company alongside friends & fellow New Zealand manufacturers David Shaw and Montreux Furniture. Through a series of presentations and conversations, the events brought together designers, manufacturers, and industry professionals to explore one of the most important elements of furniture design, fabric.

It was an inspiring opportunity to share knowledge around fabric selection, performance, and how different textiles interact with form and function. The Textile Company showcased an exceptional range of fabrics suitable for a wide variety of applications, demonstrating the depth and versatility available to today’s designers, specifiers, and homeowners.

For our Auckland presentation, we showcased our Diesel Chair upholstered in Mistral, a beautifully organic fabric from The Textile Company. Its soft texture and natural character perfectly complement the Diesel’s distinctive flanging and sculpture, creating a look that feels both relaxed and sophisticated.

Alongside the design discussion, we explored the sustainability benefits of working with local manufacturers and suppliers. At Kovacs, we are committed to sourcing locally wherever possible and incorporating natural fibres such as wool into our furniture when suited to the application. By focusing on quality materials, local craftsmanship, and enduring design, our goal remains to create furniture in the most sustainable way possible, pieces that are made to last and thoughtfully designed for the environments in which they live.

For Wellington’s Textile Talks event, we presented our new Mika Chair, upholstered in Gaston Daniela’s GDT 5499 003 fabric. During the presentation, we discussed the importance of selecting a fabric with enough movement and flexibility to work harmoniously with the Mika’s flowing curves and refined silhouette. The fabric follows the chair’s form beautifully, while its texture and colour pair effortlessly with the warmth of the chairs timber.

These presentations highlighted how fabric selection is much more than a finishing touch. The right fabric can enhance a design’s character, complement its shape, and influence how it performs and wears over time. When thoughtfully paired, fabric and furniture work together to create pieces that are both beautiful and functional.
